Expect the Planned City in China that only has AVs, or the Palo Alto gated community with a fleet of corporate-sponsored AVs”

It’s happening in another way too. Increasingly, vehicles are having their ancillary functions automated. My own vehicle turns it’s headlights on and off, according to the signal produced by a light sensor. It puts the wipers on, and chooses what speed they operate at. It also will put on the brakes (within certain speed parameters) if it detects that I’m about to rear end someone. It actually saved me from a crash once when the car in front of me stopped suddenly to turn right, just as I was checking my mirror. I expect this trend to continue, at least for a while.

In a way, it’s nothing new. Having some sort of automation goes back at least as far as the invention of automatic transmission in 1904.

People like driving. They like being in control. A car that drove you to where you wanted to go would quickly become boring. Without even the engagement of hving to actually drive the thing, how would you fill the time? Sudoku? Watch the scenery go by?

Dad? Are we nearly there yet?

I know, right! I spent 5 full minutes fretting about that. Changing it back and forward… internally muttering things like “this is one case where PHP syntax really impedes the flow of the joke”…

One case.

In the end I went for what I thought was a funnier experience for non-coders… hitting “nationality” then hitting “french” as the punchline. But I cannot lie… the coder in me died a little at that decision.

Maybe wishful thinking?

(BTW, you got the in_array() parameters the wrong way round. Could be a ‘fatal error’, ahem! ??
